Stylophone Extended

Description

Taking the classic toy synthesizer from the 1960s, we decided to extend it – and then some! This pack contains 3 instruments that use 936 individual samples! Every aspect of the Stylophone was sampled and used – from the click of the pen as it connects with the touch sensitive keyboard, to the 3 internal sounds themselves, to the release sound of the electric connection being broken when removing the pen. The connection (onset and release) sounds can also be turned off – which is something you couldn’t do with the original Stylophone. Every single note on the Stylophone was sampled individually, which resulted in far more character for the instrument overall. The version sampled was the re-released version from 2007.

The following playlist gives a few rough and simple previews of the included instruments. No effects or processing have been added – this is just the instruments in their raw state!

In addition, we expanded the range of the Stylophone from a respectable 4 octaves to an impressive 9 octaves (all 128 notes available in Ableton Live). This was done with Melodyne, which was able to create more convincing and realistic re-pitched samples for the Stylophone than Ableton Live. This is more down to the peculiarities of the Stylophone sound than any failing of Ableton, though!

The Stylophone Extended instruments also have adjustable vibrato, velocity sensitivity, and polyphony – which means you can now play chords on a Stylophone as well.

The 3-in-1 Stylophone re-creates an idea that the original instrument was supposed to have ‘Bass’, ‘Mid’, and ‘High’ sounds, which became ‘1’, ‘2’, and ‘3’, selectable on a switch. So the 3-in-1 version we created spreads the sounds across the keyboard as one instrument rather than having them treated as separate instruments.

Because the Stylophone is a simple instrument with simple sounds, but with plenty of character, it is begging to be used and abused in a variety of experimental ways. For that reason, we also created a set of effects that mangle and warp and augment the sounds in a variety of way. These effects are available separately in the ‘Stylophone FX‘ pack, or as part of the money-saving ‘Stylophone Bundle‘, which also includes drums and various other instruments created from even more Stylophone samples…

All packs on Kaboodle Sound contain a ‘Previews’ folder within the .als file – so that you can preview the instruments as you can with core Ableton packs. (You just need to click on the clip in the folder). In addition, there is a ‘Clips’ and ‘Presets’ folder, so you don’t have to open the set to load the instruments and effects.
