EVP Ghost Voices

Description

This instrument recreates the weird muffled radio speech known as Electronic Voice Phenomenon, as picked up by ghost hunting audio recorders and paranormal researchers. These recordings are usually made in an empty or haunted environment by simply leaving a tape or digital recorder running.

Often, distant, muffled voices appear, the origin of which is uncertain, but commonly suspected to be ghosts or spirits of some kind. The recorded speech is then analysed to try and interpret its content and meaning.

The 255 vocals samples in this instrument were originally recordings of random conversations, of people of a variety of genders and ages, from young children to pensioners. These recordings were then chopped, sampled, re-chopped, re-sampled and chopped and sampled again – until the actual words became indistinct.

We were careful to preserve the qualities of the voices (formants, tones, timbres), but to mangle them just enough so that the words could potentially be from any language (earthly and otherwise) and be open to interpretation.

This multiple chopping and sampling method produced an instrument that is capable of producing 16,384 possible combinations for each MIDI note, or just over 2 million possible combinations across the entire key range. You can create unique vocal soundscapes that have the eerie quality of ghost recordings or numbers stations, but there is clearly scope for many wider applications; this is great for using as background noise in sound design, unusual samples in hip-hop, etc.

Voices can be played at random, but they can also be chosen from 128 dual voices (each voice plays 2 samples simultaneously). The voices can then be distorted and modulated further with FM or AM modulation to create even stranger effects and results.

An additional random MIDI rack is included to get you started, or to use as you wish. It generates 2 random arpeggiated notes for every note it recieves.

You also get an effects rack called ‘Alien Radio Speech’ – this adds a distorted radio effect with reverb and delay, to further enhance the EVP effect.

This instrument is particularly effective with Aether Keys, which produces a spooky, distorted white noise that sounds like radio static on a broken radio. All sounds in the Spooky Sounds collection are designed to complement each other for a ghostly horror vibe.
